Blog The health risk created by Insufficient Ventilation
According to Berkley Labs*, without appropriate ventilation, indoor air quality can suffer and cause serious health problems. In a recent study they estimated that 60 % of home they looked at experienced indoor pollution at hazardous levels. The inadequate ventilation of the gases generated by gas stove was the main culprit. Gas burners and electric burners to a lesser extent, generate nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. The primary health effects of nitrogen dioxide is an increased likelihood of respiratory problems, exposure to carbon monoxide is most serious for those who suffer from cardiovascular problems.
One of the most common design problems I see is ventilation systems that are not properly extended over the range. Many systems are underpowered, re-circulated or poorly ducted, resulting in lingering food odors and grease dispersal. The average American household generates a gallon of grease a year and if not properly ventilated this grease ends up on walls, furniture pets and clothing.
Be sure that you the professional kitchen designer that you are working with factors in a properly functioning ventilation system for your kitchen remodel.
